Photo Diary | Nicole Gets Her Groove Back

I was turning 32 and had no plans for my birthday. A flight to London from LAX was only $500 so off I went to hang out with my parents. I decided I'd eat my way through the city and see some sights along the way.

[If you're wondering why I always go to London, it is because it's the cheapest "vacation" I can afford. I only ever have to worry about transportation. And it is also "home" to me because my parents live there.]

I arrived on a Sunday and the first of order of business was the Natural History Museum on Monday. But first, I needed some fuel so I decided to stop at Fernandez & Wells. I went with the Fried Eggs & Chorizo Fresco plate and a Flat White. The chorizo was flavorful and plentiful and the eggs are probably some of the best eggs I've ever had. I know you're probably tired of hearing this, but eggs in Europe really do taste better than the eggs here in America.

For The Internet!

I couldn't sleep last night because I took Sudafed before I went to bed, so naturally my mind was running at 1,000 miles per minute. Aside from having my weekly existential crisis, I also got to thinking about how tired I am of living for the internet.

I should've gotten up and started writing straight away, but I didn't want to wake my boyfriend up and I also wanted to just fall asleep because I'm absolutely terrible at waking up in the morning for work (though more sleep doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to wake up early). So please forgive me if the what you're about to read sounds like mindless garbage.

Now when I say living for the internet, I mean basing the majority of my decisions on whether or not it's worth sharing on social media or even here on my blog. For example, when I'm trying to choose my next vacation destination, I find myself thinking of what place would produce the most Instagram-worthy pictures and what would elicit the most comments on Facebook. Can we all just stop for a second and think about how sad and inauthentic, and might I add exhausting, that is?

I long for the days when I could go out and do something or go somewhere without having to think of how I could possibly turn a lunch date or a simple hike into a post. It's not that I can't do it now. I'm not obligated to post anything on the internet because I don't do this for a living. What I would really like is to turn that part of my brain off. I don't want to have to ask myself, "Am I doing this because I want to do this or because I think it'd make for a great photo-op?" Do I even really like pie* or did I just want to show people that I went to Pop Pie?

Another part of the internet that I don't like is the need to announce or address every major issue or event on our social media accounts. I don't want to feel like a bad human for not posting something on Instagram on someone's birthday or anniversary, or commenting on their post. I'm also sick of trying to romanticize everything or turning everything into a photoshoot. It's overkill and I'd like to be able to relax and enjoy the moment I'm in.

My feelings of apathy towards web relations doesn't mean that I look down on how you use the internet. I really don't care what you use it for.

I'm not quite sure where I'm going with this. This is me expressing my disappointment and anger towards myself over something I have complete control over. Please don't get me wrong, I fucking love the world wide webs. It allows me access to basically all the information I need to learn so that I can play along to Jeopardy every night at home and I've met some amazing and wonderful human friends because of the internet. I also learned how to do my make-up from watching videos so high-five internet!

I think I'm just having a hard time reconciling my social life with social media.

*Don't be an idiot, of course I actually like pie. It's food.

Crock-Pot Sunday | Turkey Enchilada Quinoa

"So, are you like a food blogger now?"
No. God, no.

But seriously, I'm not. I don't have my own recipes and I'm not a "foodie" by any means. I am just using my blog to share good recipes that I find and also to motivate me to cook at home. I am making an effort to eat at home more, not only to save money, but also to be relatively healthier.

Speaking of healthy, this past weekend, I made the healthy version of one of our favorite dishes to make at home. My boyfriend makes a really good enchilada casserole, which is basically an enchilada "lasagna," but it's very fatty and unhealthy (but ohhh so delicious).

He sent a link to me the other day of 30 healthy slow cooker recipes and one stood out to me as I knew it was something that he would really like. I followed the link for the "Slow Cooker Chicken Enchilada Quinoa" and it took me to Bobbi's Kozy Kitchen!

Let me tell you, this recipe is packed with flavor. I had to tweak it a little and it actually ended up being "Turkey Enchilada Quinoa." Here are the substitutions I made:

  • I used the Jennie-O Taco Seasoned Ground Turkey instead of ground chicken because the turkey was on sale.
  • I didn't use any jalapenos because I used spiced beans. This was simply because I didn't want to buy just ONE jalapeno. We are not big jalapeno users at home.
  • We didn't have cumin so I used curry powder instead, which is a good substitute. I also used 1/2 tbsp instead of the suggested 1 tbsp because I wasn't sure how the curry powder would alter the intended flavor.
  • I added about 1 tsp. of chipotle powder.

Trying new recipes is always a scary thing for me since I'm not an experienced cook, but I'm actually very proud of how this turned out. I'm that much more excited now for the next recipe that I'm going to attempt!

Until the next dish...*

*I really shouldn't sign off with this because then it makes it seem like I'm a food blogger, because I'm really not.

Omg why do I care so much?

Favorite Life Pro Tips/Hacks

Turn Zits into Moles/Beauty Marks
I have to admit, this is not an original idea. I saw Miley Cyrus do it once and thought it was genius. I'm merely re-blogging, if you will, this brilliant concept for you all because I know we've all been there. My favorite products to use are brown liquid eyeliners and brown pencil eyeliners. Both work just fine and it just depends on how dark you want your mark to be. It's your choice, Death Eaters.

Oh wait, wrong mark... I meant your fake mole obviously. I'm not a follower of the Dark Lord.

Or am I?

Buying Paperbacks from Half.com
When I was still in school, I used to buy and rent books online all the time. Apart from Chegg and Abe Books, I'd also go on eBay and Half.com. Half was always more reliable than all the other sites (apart from Chegg) so I used them a lot. If you're a reader and prefer real books over a Nook or Kindle, you can get super cheap paperbacks from Half.com, where they can be as cheap as $0.50!

Going to TJ Maxx and Marshall's for Beauty, Hair and Skincare Products
Unless you're a makeup artist or esthetician, I don't think it's necessary to spend a lot of money on beauty tools, skincare or hair products that you're only going to use on yourself. I love going to these stores to look for cheap brushes and other tools. I've found a lot of Real Techniques brush sets at both Marshall's and TJ Maxx. I've also found brush eggs and other brush cleaning supplies. As far as skincare goes, you obviously have to be a little cautious and check the labels. Recently I found some Elizabeth Arden products on sale, none of which were expired. It turns out EA are rolling out new packaging so anything that had old packaging was sent to discount stores. To be honest, it can be hit or miss when it comes to finding good products. You just have to be really patient and use good judgment.

Going to TJ Maxx, Marshall's and HomeGoods for Home... Goods...
As much as I love IKEA and Target, sometimes you just find better deals at TJ Maxx, Marshall's and HomeGoods. Plus I love that they sell fairly unique items. At HomeGoods, especially, you can find furniture, accent pieces, rugs, decor, etc. for a reasonable price.

Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe w/ Arugula

I'm back with another recipe from Cravings! Again, I chose a recipe that my boyfriend wouldn't completely shun away and one that was (almost) fool-proof. I went with Chrissy's "Lemony Arugula Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe." I've made cacio e pepe before with just olive oil, some cheese and pepper, but this was a little bit more spruced up as it called for pancetta, arugula, lemon juice and copious amounts of red pepper flakes (which I'm learning is pretty much in every single recipe in this book).

This dish is really that easy to make and really tasty too. I thought the combination of the pancetta, lemon and arugula went really well together. I think next time I will add even more pancetta (I love me some meat) and maybe sub in another leafy green, as the arugula is a little too bitter and something my boyfriend won't touch.

I'm really enjoying this cook book and how it's helping my confidence in the kitchen. Cooking is becoming less stressful for me and is now more of a therapeutic learning experience. I intend to completely nerd out on this sh*t.

Until the next dish...

Satisfying My Cravings

I am almost 31 years old and I couldn't cook my way out of a paper bag if my life depended on it.

Okay that's a bit of an over exaggeration, but when I was younger, I thought by now I wouldn't have to look up recipes for my favorite dishes, including Filipino ones. I thought I'd be just like my mum, who could whip up anything with whatever was in the pantry or fridge. I bought Chrissy Teigen's cookbook in particular because well, I just wanted to buy into the hype. Plus, anything with a celebrity's face on it is supposed to be good right?

I bought the cookbook because I just wanted to be a better adult and I wanted to have an understanding of the science of cooking (omg science, seriously I need to learn the science of food!) through actual cooking. Her recipes seemed easy enough, and that's why I thought I'd start here. I'm excited to dive into it and find my inner chef.

For my first attempt, I thought I'd start with breakfast because why not? First recipe, first meal of the day. I bought all my ingredients the day before and was so excited that I woke up much earlier than normal the next morning. I had to find a dish that both my boyfriend and I would enjoy. He's not big on vegetables or anything too elaborate so the breakfast sandwich was a happy medium.

These sandwiches are relatively easy to make, though probably not as convenient as buying pre-made patties or going to McDonald's for an Egg McMuffin. But to be honest, I think these are much better! They're the perfect combination of savory, sweet (yes sweet!) and spicy. However, I must point out that the recipe calls for a ridiculous amount of red pepper flakes for half a pound of ground pork. If you're not into spicy foods, I'd say add to taste instead of following the recipe.

Not pictured are the hash browns that I made to accompany the sandwich. They turned out just fine, but weren't pretty enough for the photos. My boyfriend decided to add them into his sandwich (pictured above) that's why I chose to post his sandwich instead of mine because it looks much more scrumptious.

Overall, I'm so happy with how the sandwiches turned out. It's boosted my confidence in the kitchen and I can't wait to try more of her recipes. And if those dishes turn out well, then you'll definitely be seeing more food on the blog!

P.S.
I am NOT a food blogger. I know I have zero plating or photography skills so you don't need to point it out.

P.P.S.
No, I will not post the recipes from the book. I'm almost sure that's kind of very illegal. Just go buy a cookbook! Or find someone else to break the law for you.

Things I've Started to Believe In

The title is kind of misleading in that I didn't just suddenly start "believing" in these things (and people). It was over the course of several years that my fondness and respect grew for them. I just thought I'd mention it now because I probably should at some point.

Asian Women
After my trip to the Philippines last spring, I came back home with a strong desire to connect with my culture, particularly with Asian women in pop culture and beauty. I sought out more Pinay and Asian beauty gurus and influencers (eww I hate that word) on YouTube, Instagram and Twitter. In finding these women, I felt pride not only in myself, but in them. Instead of finding their place in a world full of Kardashians, Jenners and Hadids, they created it. They're thriving and spreading a message of self-love. They helped me to recognize that our culture can and should be appreciated without needing the consent of white people. The whole Vogue/Karlie Kloss debacle has only shown that Asian culture isn't a trend and that we should be the ones telling our story.

It's only in the last few years that I recognized that representation is important in pop culture. Yes, I'm 30 years old but I still have "role models." In seeking that representation, I found some amazing women, young and old, famous and not-so famous. Here are just some of them:

Lea Salonga - Singer, actor, Disney legend, my queen, my inspiration since day one (quite literally since I can remember)
Eva Chen - Instagram Director of Fashion Partnerships, former Editor-in-Chief of Lucky magazine
Liu Wen - Supermodel
Pony - Korean makeup artist
CL - Singer, trendsetter, badass
Sable Yong - Writer and my everything beauty goals
Rachelle Ann Go - Actor, singer
Marjorie Liu - Comic book writer, novelist

I love all women because we are all amazing. I mean, we can grow humans in our bellies which is pretty fucking incredible. But there is just something about the gentleness, the quiet conviction and strength of an Asian woman that I so admire. My list isn't meant to isolate any particular culture or group. These are just the women I've been exposed to. I'd love to hear about the women that inspire you, so please do share!

Hooded / Mono Lids
In the past year, I've taken up issue with people being apologetic about their hooded eyelids. Tutorials from "Western" or American Asians always include some sort of explanation about why they have to do their eye shadow a certain way because they "lack" a certain feature. Listen, you lack nothing. Stop treating hooded/mono lids as some sort of genetic disorder. You're not inferior to anyone because you don't have a bloody socket. Besides, why should this be the standard in beauty? Makeup is an art form and you already have the perfect canvas: your beautiful face, as it is. Own it. And if you ever go to a "make-up artist" and they tell you they can't do your eyeshadow because of your eyelids, then they're not a real make-up artist.

Maybelline
Although Maybelline is one of the top drugstore brands in the world, I still feel like they don't get enough love or mention. In the past 5 years, they've consistently put out quality products. And while they do receive hype, it's not nearly as much as they deserve. So many of their products are comparable to high end ones and dare I say better than some. I mean, I could live off their entire Fit Me line alone. Their Studio line is just as impressive and if I had to pick a brand that has got everything down top to bottom it'd be Maybelline. They still make my favorite brow pencil, the Define-A-Brow pencil. And as stupid as that bulbous wand is, the formula for their EyeStudio Sculpting Brow Mascara is legit.

I could write a whole essay about how much I love their Dream Cushion foundation because it is that good. The ColorTattoo 24HR Cream Gel shadows blew the competition out of the water when it came out and it is still my favorite cream shadow formula. They've also consistently put out good mascaras. Sure there are some flops, but generally speaking, they have decent ones. The Colossal Big Shot mascara shot (all the puns intended) all the way to the top of my HG list when I first used it. And their Color Sensation Matte lipsticks are just that, sensational. And they just came out with a ton of new products that I cannot wait to try. Do yourself a favor and pick-up a thing or two from Maybelline. You're welcome.

Color Correcting
Like most of you, Michelle Phan was one of the first YT'ers that I started watching back in the day. I remember she would always use that Lise Watier color wheel and back then I was much more impressionable and naive so I bought myself one at my first IMATS. I didn't really know how to use it back then and I thought color correcting was pointless. I bought it simply because Michelle Phan was using it. Back then it felt like a waste of money, but now I kind of wish I still had it.

Color correcting kind of seemed like an unnecessary step because you were going to cover everything up with foundation anyway. It wasn't until I attended the Sephora Color Correcting Class that I realized I had been doing myself a disservice by skipping color correcting. That's not to say that everyone needs to color correct, but I myself have hyper-pigmentation as well redness because of acne scarring and such. The class opened my eyes and introduced me to the magic of yellow color correctors. While I do use green on really angry red spots, yellow neutralizes and brightens up almost everything. I remember applying the Urban Decay Naked Skin yellow corrector on the red areas of my face and the feeling I had when I applied foundation afterwards. I literally said out loud to one of the MUAs, "Oh my god, I barely have to put any foundation on!!" Popping my color correcting cherry was a moment I'll never forget. And I hope if/when you finally get around to it, it'll be just as good for you as it was for me.

PH Trip 2016 - The Eats

If I've never mentioned it in previous posts or if it never seemed obvious to you, the reader, I am Filipino. 100% pure bred Filipino. I'm not Vietnamese, Chinese or any other Asian ethnicity (though I'm sure my lineage has some Chinese or Indonesian or Malaysian in it). But all in all, I identify as Filipino.

I was born in Manila and moved to the US in 1995. Since then, I've only gone back to visit twice: in 1999 and 2001. You can probably imagine how exciting this trip was for me. It was a last minute trip as I had no previous plans to come back this year at all, but my cousin and boyfriend convinced me to make the trip to visit my grandma for her 86th birthday.

Because I hadn't been back in a while, I wasn't sure what to expect. To be honest, I didn't expect to enjoy myself as much as I did and to be genuinely upset to be leaving so soon. Ten days (or really more like 8) is not enough.

It was a strange feeling to be back to my hometown (MNL represent!). I felt a great deal of nostalgia on this particular trip and felt such a deep connection and appreciation for everything: the people, the places, the food (oh the food). We would drive by a certain place, I'd see a sign on the road or eat a certain dish and memories would come flooding back. Maybe it comes with age. I was only 14 years old when I last visited so I'm sure the only thing I was concerned about back then was looking cool to all my old friends and family.

Because I took a billion pictures, I decided it'd be best to split it up into different posts and I thought I'd start with the food! These are just highlights because most of the time, I was too busy wolfing down my food to pause and take a picture. But I do hope you enjoy the pictures that I did manage to take!

Check them out after the cut!

Breakfast Republic

Before I begin, I just want to say that I'm a simple girl and when it comes to breakfast, I don't need anything fancy. Give me my eggs benedicts, a side of hashbrowns, a cup of coffee and a glass of water and I'm good. I also don't care for "atmosphere" or whatever. A clean table and chair will do just fine, thank you. So I wasn't particularly excited when my boyfriend told me we were meeting some friends at Breakfast Republic for brunch (turned lunch). Seeing as this particular joint is in North Park, I knew it was going to be unbelievably crowded and probably overpriced.

We arrived at 9:40am and as predicted, it was already crowded. For our party of 6, the wait was a little over an hour. I wasn't surprised, nor was I really that upset either. It was expected. However, for an hour wait, I'd really hoped that it would be worth it.

Unfortunately, it wasn't.

But let's start with the things I did like.

The staff were courteous and gracious, from hosts to servers. Perfectly aware of the long wait that their customers have to endure, BR provide free coffee, complete with creamer and sugar. The place is also pretty clean, though small and cozy. I was practically sitting on my neighbor's lap. The decor is obviously what you would expect from a place like Breakfast Republic. Lots of random knick knacks that they've clearly picked up at thrift shops, to give a more home-y relaxed feel. Everything is wood and the chairs all have the rustic, worn out look (although BR only opened last year).

The menu is one page, front and back. The food menu offers your regular breakfast favorites and their respective (albeit I guess creative) variations. I did appreciate that I wasn't bombarded with 3 different pages of choices. The drink menu offers coffee, lattes, tea, juice, "antioxidant shots" which you can get individually or as a flight of 3.You can also order beer with your brekky.

I opted for water because it was cheap and I had gone to Starbucks for a latte while we were waiting for our table. I also wasn't terribly hungry because of this, so I wanted to pick something "light." I finally went for the Breakfast Hotdogs: smashed house potatoes, 2 eggs, topped with bacon and green onion ($8).

I don't know why I was so shocked to see an actual hotdog bun with my hotdogs. I was somehow under the impression that it was just the hotdogs, eggs and potatoes. Anyway, I left the bun alone because eating it with the hotdog would've been too filling.

The hotdog wasn't anything special. It tasted like a Friar Frank except it was grilled. The potatoes were potatoes and the bacon was bacon. I really don't know what else I can possibly say about them. I'd rather go to Coco's, to be honest.

My boyfriend ordered the American: 3 eggs, 3 strips of bacon, house potatoes and toast ($10). He substituted the toast with Churro Pancakes, which I unfortunately forgot to photograph. But don't worry, it wasn't anything special either. We thought the batter would be a churro flavored batter, but their Churro Pancakes are literally regular pancakes that have been dumped with tons, and I mean TONS, of cinnamon and sugar. I didn't try it for myself because it didn't look appetizing, but my boyfriend said that the batter tasted like Bisquik. Oh, by the way, I should mention it cost an extra $4 to substitute the toast with the ONE Churro Pancake.

His friend ordered the Breakfast Jambalaya ($13), which is just a regular jambalaya topped with eggs. This dish was also unimpressive as he said the jambalaya tasted old or as if it had been sitting out for a long time.

So as you can probably tell from this review, we were completely underwhelmed. The food wasn't bad at all, but it just didn't live up to the Yelp hype. Yes, it's adorable with all its hipster decor, and you can have craft beer with your eggs, but I don't think it's worth the hour+ wait. Bring me to Harry's Coffee Shop any day please. I'd gladly wait an hour for their hashbrowns.

Blue Springs, MO

Last month I made a trip out to Kansas City, MO to visit one of my very best friends, Steffi Olson. Steffi moved to Missouri just two years ago with her husband to start a new life. Although we chat with one another almost every single day, and share pictures either through text messages or by simply perusing through each other's Instagram and Facebook accounts, seeing each other in person was very much something that both of us needed. I was also very much excited to meet her 5 month old son Hudson and for him to get to know his Auntie Nicole. However, what I was looking forward to the most was to spend some quality time with Steffi.

With this being my first real trip to the midwest (I know layovers don't count), I didn't know what to expect. I flew in late Thursday and was greeted with a lovely surprise. I was under the impression that she was coming alone, but when I walked out, Hudson was right there with her! It was such a nice welcome, especially after spending half the day travelling. I'm always worried about how babies will respond when they first meet me. I'm one of those people that gets deeply offended if a baby doesn't like me, but Hudson greeted me with a huge smile on his face. It didn't last too long though because as soon as we got on the freeway, he started wailing. We think he might've been freaked out with me sitting in the back with him and thinking his mom had left him. I totally get it though. I would be freaked out too if my mom stuck me in my car seat next to a complete stranger, haha.

I tried my best to console him, but we all know that no one is better at that than mom. So we exited, pulled over and I took the wheel. I just want to remind you all that I'm a little blind. Although I wear glasses at night when I drive, I still get a little paranoid and I was on super high alert since I was driving in a place I had never been before. Don't worry, we made it home safely and it turns out, it wasn't the last time I'd be doing it.

The next morning, I woke up to the sounds of Hudson cooing. I miss being in a house with a baby so it was nice to experience that again, even if it was just for a few days. We spent the day running errands, getting lost and visiting shops. Since Friday was my first time being out and about in KC in the day time, I realized just how green and lush it was. It was a nice break from all the brown and dry brush we have here in San Diego.

We had lunch at this place called Culver's, which is basically like their In N Out. I don't know, maybe I was just really hungry, but I think Culver's could give In N Out a run for their money. I really liked the meat patty and it tasted just like a homemade burger, which I'm sure we can all agree on, is the best kind of burger. The bacon they use has so much flavor and is nice and crispy. Culver's also makes their own root beer and it was probably one of the best I've ever tasted. I was kind of sad we didn't get to eat there again. Next time, Culver's, next time. After lunch, Steffi brought me to a used book store near their house where she got me that lovely Cheshire The Cat coffee mug. It was like a little playground for me. They sold books, movies, music (I'm pretty sure I saw cassette tapes), collectibles and toys.

That night, Steffi and her husband Scott took me to a restaurant called Smokehouse Bar-B-Que and we ordered BBQ ribs and Burnt Ends, which I've been told is the thing that KC is known for. Scott ordered some for himself and shared a couple of pieces with me. Let me tell you, we need to have BBQ restaurants here in San Diego serving them burnt ends if they aren't already. If you don't know what burnt ends are, they're basically the fatty end of a brisket that's been cut off, cut into a cube and cooked into absolute BBQ perfection. I almost regretted ordering ribs, but I was completely oblivious to this burnt end business until Scott's plate came out. My meal was delicious though and the beans at Smokehouse were the best I've ever had. I would've loved to take a gallon tub of beans with me to take home. This was also the first time I had Texas Toast with my ribs.

After dinner we headed home and Steffi and I were able to finally sit down and just have some BFF quality time. We watched TV and talked about whatever subject came to mind and discussed what we were doing the next day. Oh yes, I forgot to mention that it rained pretty much the whole day that Friday. However, I had just come from San Diego, where we were all suffering from weeks and weeks of heat waves so the rain was a welcome change.

On Saturday, we started the day off at the salon. Both Steffi and I had major brow issues and needed some help from her favorite brow esthetician. Bless her heart because she did a great job shaping my pathetic excuse for eyebrows. It's been almost a month and while I haven't gotten them waxed since, it is now much easier for me to maintain the shape myself. Although we were only out less than an hour, it was still nice to have that time to do girly things and just be... girly! It was something I needed and I'm sure Steffi did too. We stopped off at a Starbucks before heading home and popped our PSL cherries, so to speak. It was the first time either of us had a Pumpkin Spice Latte and they are actually not that bad. I can see why someone could get addicted to it.

After getting ourselves dressed and ready, we headed to the Fall Fun Fest, which Blue Springs holds every year. It's pretty much a street fair, where they close off a stretch of the road, and this one being Main Street. Just like with any other fair or festival, parking was sure to be a headache, so we ended up parking the car a few blocks down, in front of Scott's friend's house. Saturday was a great day to be out and enjoy the outdoors. The sun was shining and the weather was perfect. It reminded me of a nice Spring day here in San Diego.

During our walk from the car to Main Street, I saw how different Missouri was to San Diego. The houses were older and had that quaint feel to it. I kept telling Steffi that everything looked like what you would see in movies about small towns. You could tell that whoever lived in the houses, they had been there for years and years. No one had fences and if they did, it was to fence in their own vegetable garden. I felt somewhat nostalgic because it reminded me so much of spending my summers in the province of Zambales, Philippines. Everything from the narrow streets, to the old beatdown cars parked on the drive, gardens, wide open spaces surrounding each house, made me feel at home in a weird way. It was like I had walked these streets before.

After the short walk from the car, we finally reached Main Street and it was lined with all sorts of vendors, the majority of whom were food vendors all selling BBQ, all claiming it was the best in town. I had decided early on that I was going to try BBQ in some form, but actually picking which vendor to go to proved to be a somewhat difficult task with so many places to choose from. Half way down, I saw the words “Brisket Fries” in big letters and knew that was going to be the one. We walked the whole stretch and visited the small feeding/petting zoo at the end of the street where Hudson, Steffi and I got to feed all sorts of animals. There were pigs, goats, antelope (I almost wrote anchovy), a camel and there was even a zebra.

On the way back was when we decided to eat lunch. Steffi got a corndog, Scott a giant turkey leg and I got my brisket fries. I don't even know how to describe what I felt when I took that first bite. The brisket, it was perfect. It was flavorful and tender; it melted in my mouth. I kept saying, “I wish I could have this in my mouth all the time.” Yes, I said those exact words. Yes, it was THAT good. After eating, we made our way to the other side of the fair where all the rides where setup. On the way we made a stop at a booth to look at some handmade bracelets. Steffi had the great idea of picking up a pair as a sort of unofficial official friendship bracelet. Of course, I was all for it!

The rides at the Fall Fun Fest were the typical ones you see at any fair: some sort of variation of the Zipper, a Tilt-O-Whirl, a carousel, etc. I'm not a huge fan of those rickety rides because I always think they're going to fall apart, and I don't think Steffi was either. However, she did end up taking Hudson on his first carousel ride. It was pretty funny because towards the end, you could tell Hudson was over it.

Another highlight of the Fall Fun Fest was discovering a young new artist called Bri Pi. I bought a couple of buttons from her booth and was tempted to buy prints, but alas, it was a little expensive for me. I'm so glad we stopped to look at her work, though. I'm sure I'll be hearing about her at some point in the future because she has real talent.

After spending a couple of hours enjoying the Missouri sun, we headed home to rest. Later, Steffi, Hudson and I made a trip to our beloved Target to pick up a couple of essentials (you know, a new mascara, the usual). We left Scott at home to start on the homemade pizza we were going to eat for dinner. Steffi also wanted to make some iced tea so she picked up a new glass pitcher. It's kind of funny because she and I always talk about our countless trips to Target and here we were finally going to our favorite store together. I wish we could do more Target trips; they're always better with your best friend.

When we got home, Scott had already finished making the dough and was prepping all the ingredients for the sauce. The house smelled amazing and I really could not wait to try their famous (well famous in their house) homemade pizza. It was pretty cool watching Scott knead the dough, although I was a little disappointed he didn't toss it in the air like they do on TV. While waiting for the pizza to cook, we all hung out in the kitchen watching YouTube videos. Scott even took out his BB-8 and showed off its cool tricks. I got a kick out of the messaging feature, which allows you to record a video through your phone and the BB-8 “transmits” it like they do in the movies.

Before long, the pizza was ready and we all grabbed a spot in front of the TV for dinner and a movie. Steffi had planned on making iced tea with the tea she bought at World Market the previous day, but while pouring the water into the pitcher, the glass cracked and we were left with a literal hot (water) mess. I was a little sad since I was also looking forward to it, but I think we were all just relieved that the glass had not decided to completely break apart and shatter into a billion pieces on the kitchen floor. Catastrophe avoided.

Taking that first bite of the pizza, I felt the same sensation I felt when I took a bite of those brisket fries earlier in the day. The dough was thin, but it didn't taste like cardboard and the crust was crispy. I don't know exactly what Scott had put in the sauce, but the flavor was rich. I could taste the tomato, the onions, the garlic, the different spices and they all worked so perfectly together. They also put other cheeses on top of the traditional mozzarella and it packed a complimentary punch to the savory sauce that lay underneath it. I still daydream about that pizza.

Sunday was my last full day in KC as I was leaving very early in the morning the next day. Scott drove over to a place called LaMar's Donuts, which Steffi had told me about a couple of days before. She raved about them and although I do trust her opinions on food, I wasn't exactly convinced. I mean you'd have to really be clueless to mess up a donut, but sometimes some places just miss the mark. Scott came home with a half dozen assorted donuts and needless to say, they didn't last long. I picked up the traditional glazed donut and it did not disappoint. The dough was so soft and moist, I almost couldn't believe I was eating a donut. And you know what? I'd take LaMar's over Krispy Kreme any day.

It was another glorious sunny day and it was perfect for a day out at “The Plaza” in downtown KC. Formally called the Country Club Plaza, but referred to as the The Plaza by the locals, it's an impressive 55 acre shopping district. Steffi, Hudson and I were only able to walk down a few blocks when we went. I think The Plaza is meant for multiple trips so I'll make sure to cover more ground the next time. Steffi was on a mission to find a jewelry holder at Anthropologie so we made our way over. She spent some time trying on a dress, so Hudson and I sat down people watching and he, naturally, charmed everyone's socks off.

For whatever reason, I had the sudden urge to buy a fedora. I knew Urban Outfitters would have some, so we walked across the street to find one and I ended up finding exactly what I was looking for. Needless to say, our shopping trip was a success. We walked a few more blocks and went into several shops before finally deciding to head home. At this point, I had learned that it was much better to sit up front with Steffi than to sit with Hudson in the back to avoid any incidents like the one that happened on my first night there. However, he was feeling extra fussy, which Steffi later said was due to a stomach ache, and cried as soon as we took off. Like Thursday, we again had to pull over and I drove us home. Don't get me wrong, I didn't mind it at all. I just felt terrible for Hudson and wished there was some way we could've consoled him. Driving in the day time was much better than in the night, by the way. I felt less paranoid and had sort of learned my way around by that time.

Back at the house, Scott was busy making BBQ ribs from his smoker. We came back and the sweet, smokey aroma permeated throughout the entire place. Smoking ribs takes pretty much the whole day and that's why Scott stayed back and let us girls (and Hudson) go shopping by ourselves. Plus, how much fun would it have been to follow two girls around from shop to shop all afternoon? After about an hour, dinner was ready. The ribs were smoked just right; the meat fell right off the bone and it was soft and juicy. Like a true Filipino, Steffi cooked some rice to eat with the ribs. I had never eaten BBQ ribs with rice prior to tha, but I think I'm going to start.

Although my flight the next morning was at 7am, meaning I'd have to be up by 5am, I remember staying up just until midnight. We spent the night watching TV and hanging onto the last few hours we had to actually spend time with another. I was sad to be leaving my best friend. Like I mentioned in the beginning, Steffi and I keep each other up to date with each other's lives on a daily basis and yes of course, I do miss actually being able to see her, but it wasn't until I visited that I realized just how much I had missed her and just how much our friendship meant to me. She is one of the most amazing people I know and watching her with Hudson, I was completely in awe. Steffi has blossomed into a wonderful woman, one that I absolutely admire and adore. I don't think I tell her this enough, but she is one of my heroes. Knowing what Steffi has gone through to get where she is today, I feel so incredibly proud and inspired. Watching her be a mother to Hudson, I don't even know how to express the admiration I have for her. I witnessed the difficulties of being a mom and saw how she handled it all with grace, patience and love and I can only hope that one day, I can be the same with my child.

As if it wasn't obvious by this novel that I wrote, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in Missouri, going shopping, eating lots of good food, watching Shark Tank, feeding Hudson, and sitting around drinking tea and having girl talk. It's been one of my favorite trips in the last couple of years and I hope I can make it out to KC again in the near future. Thank you so much Olsons for having me and for being the best hosts (homemade pizza from scratch AND smoked BBQ FTW!). You guys definitely haven't seen the last of me!

Birthday Wishlist

Every year I do one of these and every year I have to mention that I'm not asking any of you to get this for me. It's simply just a list of things I'm considering getting for myself for my birthday :)

1. Glass Water Bottle - I've been wanting one of these for so long and I really don't know why I keep holding it off.

2. Stila Eyebrow Pen - This is the only eyebrow pen on the market (that I can afford) that doesn't have a ridiculous amount of red in it.

3. MAC Pro Longwear Concealer NC20 - I could've saved up to buy this ages ago, but again I just hold off until I finish all the concealer I keep buying.

4. MAC e/s singles (to fill my new palette!) - It's so hard picking out shades. I have 4 spots filled up in my palette right now and need suggestions on 12 more!

5. Full Body Massage - I can actually get this for free at work ;)

6. Black Sheer Ankle Socks - I prefer these over cotton socks when I wear boots.

7. Soleil Tan de Chanel  - The BEST bronzing base I've ever used in my entire life. If someone asked me what my all time favorite beauty product is, I would pick Soleil Tan de Chanel all day, everyday.

8. IKEA Raskog Cart (yes another one!) - I think I need another one for lotion/skincare products and other knick knack paddy wacks.

SDCC 2015 Highlights

Here's the wrap-up of my 2015 SDCC Photo Diaries. Check out some of the highlights after the jump!

Doctor Who Fan Meetup at HOB

This year I was finally able to go to the Doctor Who Fan Meet-Up, which is a free event that BBCA puts together every year. Steve and I waited for almost 4 hours and were lucky enough to be close to the front of the line. We were also lucky enough to have been under some scaffolding that happened to be up next to the House of Blues so we didn't have to sit in the sun for hours on end.

By far, this was probably the best event I've attended so far. Of course had I actually camped out for the Star Wars panel this year, then this would've been a close second, but I digress. Check out the photos from this great event after the jump!

Galaxy Taco

Last Sunday a few friends and I headed over to Galaxy Taco in La Jolla. It's a new taco shop that opened last month, just blocks away from La Jolla Shores. I don't really hang around that area and I don't know if there are any other taco shops nearby, but I think Galaxy Taco definitely fits in.

Steve's friend recommended the Tacolandia, which is their most popular taco. I also ordered the Baja Fried Fish Taco because well, we are by the ocean after all. Each taco is $5 and I think they make the tortilla in-house.

I ate the fish taco first because I wanted to save the "best" for last. The fish taco is really nothing special. It is what it is: battered fish, cabbage, pico de gallo, chipotle crema, radish, avocado. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't mind blowing. I think I would've preferred it with more chipotle dressing. I was disappointed with the fact that the tortilla quickly fell apart. Hopefully it was just that particular batch they had that day, but if not... well.

Next up was The Tacolandia: marinated, braised and seared pork shoulder, jalapeño slaw, chicharron. On paper, it sounds freaking amazing. In my mouth, not so much. The most memorable thing about it was how bland it was. I don't know what the marinade was, but it definitely needed more flavor. I had to add Tapatio to it, which I was hoping I wouldn't have to do. I wanted to taste the taco as is, but there was nothing to taste. The meat wasn't too dry though and I did enjoy the different textures.

Galaxy Taco has a lot of potential and I don't think it's fair to really judge them too harshly now. I will definitely go back to try other tacos. Their service was wonderful and the restaurant itself is beautiful. Now if the food can just catch up, I can see Galaxy Taco becoming a favorite for locals and tourists.

New Set-Up feat. IKEA Raskog Utility Cart

For a very long time, I've had my make-up on the floor up against my bathroom wall. It worked for awhile, but my back started to hurt by sitting and slouching over the mirror. My legs have also suffered from sitting cross legged on the floor.

I've wanted to buy a shelf for months now but could never find the right one. I actually found the cart a couple of months ago, but I wanted to keep looking in case I saw something else I liked. This past weekend I made the leap and purchased the IKEA Raskog Utility Cart. It's only $29.99 and it's really easy to put together. It only took me 30 minutes!

I love it so much I might get another for my lotion and other skincare, as well the random knick knacks I have laying around my room.

P.S.
I'm thinking of "relaunching" the blog. So keep checking back to see the little changes I'll be making.

Photo Diary: London Holiday 2014 [Highlights]

Yes, once again I made a trip back to London to spend the holidays with my parents. This time was a little more special than my previous trips because I also got to spend it with my boyfriend, who prior to this trip, had never been out of the country.

We took about 1000+ photos so I thought I'd just give you some of the highlights. I don't even have all of the photos because about a third of them are in his phone so I hope you enjoy the ones that I picked from my bunch.

(I know it's been months since I last blogged. Life and work have been beyond hectic.)

Oblig plane-sunset-from-the-window-make-sure-to-get-the-wing-in-the-shot photo.

First order of business. Always.

First time having mince pie.

When my mom went to the PI back in October, she got me some goodies! Never heard of Nichido so I was excited to try out a couple of their products.

My San Diego family and I did Secret Santa for Christmas, but since I was going to be away, I had to take my (wrapped) present and open it in front of everyone during a Google Hangout. In short, it was hectic and I couldn't really understand what anyone was saying because everyone tried to talk all at once.

If I'm being honest with myself, this is the reason why I come to London for Christmas. Mum's Christmas Roast, always delicious.

August/September Photo Diary

My summer has definitely been quite eventful. If you follow me on Twitter, then some of this might be old news. But for those who don't, hope you enjoy!

In the very beginning of August, I had the opportunity to see Jay-Z and Beyonce's On The Run concert at the Rose Bowl with one of my bests, Genesis.

We made a trip out of the whole day while we were out there. He took me to one of his favorite places to eat called Aroma Coffee & Tea in Studio City. We also visited Trisha at her new place and I met her for the first time after being friends on Twitter and via Gen for years. It was definitely a highlight of my day. The show was great and I really enjoyed myself, even though it was a little awkward to watch at times with all those divorce rumors going around. I likened it to watching your best friend and her husband quietly throwing shade at one another at a dinner party they've invited everyone to.

If you didn't know, I temporarily went back to having blonde panels. And also turned into a giraffe.

But after two weeks, I quickly grew tired of it and went back to my hairdresser's and told her to dye everything to dark brown. Oddly enough, my appointment happened to be on birthday. Hair appointments are like mini Christmases to me so basically it was Christmas on my birthday. Best day ever.

Oh and did I mention I also got a fringe?...

And momentarily transformed into an Asian Daisy Lowe?

Side note: You know you're getting a little old when the most exciting thing you've done in years is get bangs.

Anyway, I went to the beach in September for the first time this summer, which was technically the second but the other time was at a bonfire at night.

My niece turned 3 this year and her parents threw her a party at the Bahia. And yup, I got on one of those stand-up paddle boards... except I didn't actually stand, haha.

We also had some visitors from Missouri ;)

My bestfriend Steffi and her fiance (YES FIANCE!) visited from Missouri for a weekend and stopped by the beach to hang out. Can you tell how happy I was??

Lots of awesome Padres fun happened too. I unintentionally attended a Seth Smith autograph signing at the Sony store at Fashion Valley.

I finally made it out to a day game to watch the one and only Bobby Cressey play the oregonorgan.

So serious.

Seriously, I love this place.

And lastly...

Tommy and I took a picture for our Save the Date. Just kidding. But this was a pretty awesome day. And yes, he's even prettier in person.

I hope you guys enjoyed this photo diary. I know September isn't over yet, so I may add more pictures to this later on. We shall see...
